You can buy your ferry ticket at the harbour office prior to departure. You can pay using cash, pin, or a Euro- or VISA card. There is also a cash machine/ ATM in the harbour office. You can also buy an e-ticket on the ferry company’s website which saves you waiting in the queue on busy days. You can embark straight away with a home-printed ticket.

In recent years you can get to Schiermonnikoog even more quickly. Wagenborg Passenger Services also runs a water taxi service available for call-outs anytime between 6 a.m. and midnight.

The water taxis provide quick crossings (approximately 15 minutes) between Lauwersoog and Schiermonnikoog. In addition, a water taxi can be deployed on demand for quick passage to or from one of the other Dutch or German islands, or for a crossing to or from example Zoutkamp or Oostmahorn.

You can get more information about prices, scheduled departures and vacant seats at You can also call: 0900-WADTAXI or 0900-9238 (€ 0,35 p/m). Foreign customers need to call +31(0)85-4011008.

You can put your hand baggage (up to 30 kilos) in one of the free baggage carts at the boat. Hand baggage only means suitcases, bags, duffel bags and backpacks. Boxes, tools and the like are not included. The baggage carts are first to leave the boat.

If you have more than 30 kilos of luggage, or items other than hand baggage then you need to contact: Transportbedrijf Ridder (tel 0519-531851)

Your may take your bike and / or trailer on board for a fee. For trailers there are special towing dollies (some electric) available on request from the ticket office in the harbour office which can be pushed on board manually. If you want to take a trailer, you should make a telephone reservation in advance, including the number plate of the trailer. No caravans are allowed on Schiermonnikoog.

Elektric baggage transport

If you would rather walk or cycle to your destination from the boat, there is the possibility to have your luggage transported separately to your accommodation. The luggage will be transported by an electrically powered vehicle which is also equipped with solar panels to generate part of its own energy.

There are two taxi companies on the island: Taxi Boersma  and Taxi Drent (0519-531400) Both companies wait at the dock to meet new arrivals and can be reserved for other routes.

The best way to get around the island is on foot or by bike. You can either bring your own bike with you or hire one after you have arrived. On Schiermonnikoog there are two bicycle companies: Fietsverhuur Soepboer en Fietsenverhuur Schiermonnikoog.

Cycling for nature

By both bike rental companies you can hire a ‘normal’ bike or a ‘green’ one. Green bikes have a € 2,-, surcharge which goes towards a nature conservation project on the island. Cyclists who hire a green bike also get a pennant to make their bike green. Cyclists who bring their own bikes to the island can of course also make their bikes green for  € 2,-.

The projects that are funded by this scheme are small scale ones that are too small to be entitled to receive other subsidies.
